2023 MAGS Distinguished Master's Thesis Award Nominees Announced

Two GVSU alumni have been nominated for the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) Distinguished Master’s Thesis Awards.

The MAGS Distinguished Master’s Thesis Awards recognizes and rewards notable scholarship and research at the master’s level. The GVSU Thesis Review Committee has selected Brittany Bahl and Kevin Kredit for their master’s theses.

Bahl received her Master of Science in Communications degree in 2022. Her thesis, Princes, Moms, and Warriors: A Feminist Rhetorical Analysis of Toxic Depiction in Film, is the nominee for the Social Sciences category.

Kredit received his Master of Science in Applied Computer Science degree in 2020. His thesis, Confronting Wicked Crypto: Wicked Problems, Encryption Policy, and Exceptional Access Technology, is the nominee for the Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Engineering category.

The review committee deemed both theses to be the strongest representation of GVSU's graduate student thesis work from the past two academic years. Dr. Richard Besel, Professor of Communications and chair of Bahl’s thesis committee, wrote in support of her work, “Her thesis… is a timely and important rhetorical criticism of the three artifacts found in popular culture… Brittany Bahl not only submitted an outstanding thesis, but she would also be a worthy recipient of this honor.”

Dr. Andrew Kalafut, from the School of Computing and chair of Kredit’s thesis committee, wrote in support of his work, “…a truly important problem in computing… public policy decisions by the government will have lasting effects on security and privacy… what I have been most impressed by has been Kevin’s willingness and ability… to cover all sides of the issue.”

The MAGS winners will be announced in early 2023. Congratulations to both Brittany Bahl and Kevin Kredit!
