NASA'S MICHIGAN SPACE GRANT CONSORTIUM FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Grand Valley State University is a member of NASA’s Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC).They are one of 11 academic affiliate MSGC institutions in Michigan and a participant in fellowship and grant funding opportunities competitively offered through the consortium.  Undergraduate and graduate students may seek fellowships to carry out research projects through MSGC under the mentorship of GVSU faculty.

Fellowships can benefit students seeking research and educational opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Aerospace, Space or Earth System Science. MSGC will even fund proposals in disciplines that may appear to be outside of those bounds such as Communications, Psychology, Medicine and Movement Science which can impact science education and the exploration of Earth and space.

Examples for requests include: Seed grants that can be provided to faculty and staff for new lines of research; program grants that can support teaching, training, and public outreach activities; and fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students that can be used for research projects. Fellowship awards for undergraduate and graduate students are $2,500 and $5,000, respectively.  Each fellowship student works closely with a faculty mentor and will be paid a stipend over a ten-week summer period.

For over two decades, GVSU faculty and students have built a substantial record of obtaining MSGC fellowships and grants enriching the scholarship and education experience of both GVSU students and faculty. Last year, GVSU secured approximately $75,000 in fellowship and grant support from MSGC. This included fellowships for 8 students, seed grants for 2 faculty members, and grants for 4 other students for outreach programs and k-12 science training.

Interested students can discuss ideas with Dr. Bopi Biddanda, as well as seek guidance regarding any part of the application process. Dr. Biddanda can be contacted at [email protected] or (616) 331-3978. Students should submit an intention to apply to Dr. Biddanda by October 4, 2019.
