What is Graduate Research?

Graduate-level research is an important part of the graduate experience because it asks students to explore a focused question, engage deeply with existing scholarship, and contribute new ideas or evidence in their field. At GVSU, research may take many forms, including literature reviews, projects, theses, dissertations, and discipline-specific applied work.

Graduate research helps students build advanced skills in critical thinking, analysis, writing, and problem-solving. It also prepares students for professional practice, doctoral study, and leadership in their field by giving them experience working independently and with faculty guidance on substantial academic work. GVSU offers several resources to support graduate research at every stage.

Students can get writing and research support through the Knowledge Market, research help from a subject specialist in person or online, guidance through the Thesis + Dissertation page, and data support through the Statistical Consulting Center. These resources are designed to help students develop strong research projects and complete their work with confidence.
