Your student is in good hands

Welcome to Grand Valley State University! As the parent or guardian of a prospective student, we want to give you a glimpse of what it’s like to be part of the Laker family.

First off, we may not be the school you remember from when you were college-aged. We still offer the same student-focused education and outstanding value, but we’ve grown with West Michigan and evolved to meet the needs of today's -- and tomorrow's -- college students.

We've grown to become the third largest university in Michigan, but maintained our small school feel. Through personalized attention and extensive resources, Grand Valley is dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment in which your student can thrive.

With a strong emphasis on academic excellence, faculty engagement, and an inclusive campus culture, we ensure every student receives the education and encouragement they need to succeed. Scroll down to learn more about how Grand Valley has evolved from the “hidden gem of the Midwest” to the flagship university for Michigan's future.

Grand Valley excels at providing exceptional academic resources and unwavering support. Our campuses feature state-of-the-art facilities, including the innovative Mary Idema Pew Library and Learning Information Commons, advanced learning labs, and simulation centers, all designed to prepare students for their careers.

With a wide variety of academic programs, small class sizes, and opportunities to conduct research with award-winning faculty, students receive an intimate educational experience. Dedicated advisors and academic support centers are always available to guide your student throughout their Grand Valley journey.

This is why Grand Valley is one of Michigan’s flagship institutions and the perfect place for your student to grow and excel.

Providing a Safe Learning Environment

We want students to feel like campus is their home away from home, and safety and security are a big part of that.

Living on-campus offers safe neighborhoods and a supportive environment with five different housing options to choose from. Students live in close proximity to classes, campus recreation opportunities, dining facilities, and support services, while enjoying 24/7 security from our Department of Public Safety. This provides peace of mind, which is crucial in building an effective learning environment and is one of the reasons why students who live on campus get higher grades than those who don't. On-campus residents are also more likely to stay in school.
