Xinguanos: An Amazonian People, their History and Prehistory

Date and Time

Tuesday, October 2, 2012 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM

Description

Dr. Morgan Schmidt of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, Belém, Pará, Brazil will discuss the the Kuikuro people, part of the Xinguano Nation and how Dr. Schmidt’s ethnoarchaeological landscape research over the last two decades has been carried out in collaboration with the Kuikuro to understand the history and pre-history of the Xinguanos. This research has revealed many surprises and helped reformulate our view of lowland indigenous peoples and the Amazon’s past.

Dr. Schmidt is the author of numerous publications on this topic, for example, "The legacy of cultural landscapes in the Brazilian Amazon: implications for biodiversity" published in 2006 in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of Biological Sciences, 362: 197-208.
