The Department of Music, Theatre and Dance will present the world premiere of "Hear Me Roar," written by faculty member James Bell.

Performances are on March 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m., March 30 at 2:00 p.m., April 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. and April 6 at 2 p.m. at the Haas Center for Performing Arts.

"Hear Me Roar" was written Bell, professor of theater, and directed by Demetria Thomas, assistant professor of theater. Purchase tickets online.

Thomas said directing the world premiere means that audience feedback is especially important.

“This is a broad piece, so focusing the audience’s eye is the biggest task,” Thomas said. “I’d like the audience to tell us in their responses and applause how they feel about the piece.”

The production also presents Grand Valley students with the opportunity to develop their characters without influences from previous productions, Thomas said. This has led to increased creativity and collaboration between students during rehearsals. “I love watching them engage with the text and support each other on this journey,” she said.

Sydney Hartmann, a fourth-year student who is majoring in theater, and hospitality and tourism management, plays Mary in this production. Hartmann said this is an opportunity to truly make the role their own.

“There is a difference in the work you do on a show that's been produced before and an original play,” Hartmann said. “I think it is such a needed experience for artists to be a part of because it trains you to be more flexible and creative.

“People will be blown away by how funny the show is. It is such a delightful explosion of the most comedic forms of theater.”
