TRIO staff and students from GVSU, Muskegon and Kellogg community
colleges participated in the first TRIO Olympics June 27.
The TRIO Federal Programs launched the first TRIO Olympics, bringing
together more than 200 students from GVSU’s five TRIO programs —
Upward Bound (Grand Rapids and Detroit), Upward Bound Math-Science
(Detroit and Wyoming) and Talent Search — in a spirited day of
competition June 27.
Muskegon Community College Upward Bound and Kellogg Community College
Upward Bound joined the Lakers for competitive events, leadership
development and community building.
Held on the Valley Campus, the TRIO Olympics featured team relays,
academic challenges and creative spirit events designed to promote
leadership, collaboration and a strong TRIO identity. Students
showcased their talents, forged new friendships and competed with pride.
Nykia Gaines, associate vice president for Federal TRIO Programs,
said: “The TRIO Olympics was more than a competition. It was a
celebration of the brilliance, strength and belonging our students
bring to the GVSU community.”
Whitney Thomas, director of TRIO Upward Bound Math Science Detroit,
said it was inspiring to see students from all programs fully engaged
throughout the day. "They were applying their knowledge in a fun,
dynamic and competitive environment that truly showcased the spirit of
TRIO,” she said.
B. Donta Truss, vice president for Enrollment Development and
Educational Outreach, said the event marked a new GVSU tradition.
"I want to extend my appreciation to the TRIO staff, students
and our partners from Muskegon and Kellogg community colleges,"
Truss said. "The participation and enthusiasm from students
throughout the day highlights the power and promise of TRIO and marks
Grand Valley as a place where TRIO champions are made."
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences program offers a venue for departments to invite notable alumni to share their experiences, insights and advice with students.
