Faculty member

Hermann Kurthen, professor of sociology, died October 11, 2023, at his home. He was 71.

Kurthen taught at Grand Valley since 2004, after coming to the United States as an exchange faculty member. Before Grand Valley, Kurthen taught at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Stony Brook University and the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany.

Jeff Rothstein, professor and chair of the Sociology Department, said: "Hermann was a dedicated scholar, teacher and colleague with a wry sense of humor and a zest for life. Hermann pursued his work with the same dogged determination as when he climbed mountains and ran marathons, publishing widely and mentoring many students and colleagues in his nearly two decades at GVSU."

Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Hermann Kurthen and Kay Losey Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship at Grand Valley.
