Majors vs Minors: What is the Difference?

What is a Major?
At GVSU, your major is your primary area of academic focus and the degree you’ll earn upon graduation. It typically aligns with your long-term career goals and passion areas. For example, majoring in accounting can lead to a career in the accounting or finance field. Your major will make up most of your coursework and is listed on your diploma.

What is a Minor?
A minor at GVSU is a secondary area of study that complements your major or reflects a personal interest. For example, a student interested in sports psychology might major in exercise science and minor in psychology. You might also major in biology and minor in classic simply because it brings you joy. Minors typically require 18 to 24 credits, depending on the program. Your minor will appear on your academic transcript, but not on your diploma.

Talk to Your Academic Advisor
Before adding a minor, connect with your academic advisor. They’ll help you understand how your minor can fit with your major, how to make the most of your electives and general education requirements, and how to stay on track for graduation.
