Description of the Organization

WGVU is the public broadcasting station in West Grand Rapids, headquartered out of the Eberhard Center in downtown Grand Rapids. The organization is relatively small, with TV production on the bottom floor and radio upstairs. WGVU broadcasting reaches over 2.4 million television viewers in 28 counties and over 1.3 million radio listeners from Grand Rapids to the Lakeshore.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

Throughout the semester I helped produce the show the Grand Valley State Sports Report. I wrote the script every Sunday and worked in studio on Monday mornings, usually working behind the camera and occasionally monitoring audio. In studio, Jake Levy hosted the show and interviewed coaches of GV sports. I was also able to help film some of the sports that premiered on the show.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned how to write scripts for sports broadcasting, run the camera during shoots, properly cue on-screen talent, set up and tear down the camera, film sports, and monitor audio.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of the internship was being able to see the script that I worked on "come to life" in studio every Monday and finally see the finished project no air and on Youtube.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience has allowed me to be more confident about my ability to produce shows and work in the field of multimedia journalism. It has taught me important skills, especially those related to script-writing and audio and visual aspects, that will be necessary for my future jobs and career path. Overall, the internship has helped me feel more confident about my skills and future career goals.
