Description of the Organization

Dominion Systems is an HR company that, while has business in multiple states, is based here locally in Grand Rapids. The company is small, but has been growing quite a bit over the past few years. Dominion is used to help run payroll, applicant tracking, and many other employee reports. This is almost all ran through their website. There is a tax department, sales department, client solutions department, and the IT department. The tax department makes sure all taxes are filed for client companies, the sales department brings in new customers and alerts current customers of product updates from the IT department. The client relations department checks in with the current customers and helps with any issues they are experiencing. The IT department is in charge of adding new pages to stay competitive in the online payroll/HR market.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

The projects in the IT department that I dealt with starts simple with writing acceptance criteria, where I would have to write the specifications of the current page, the required data that the user must input, and the required functionality to be added for a page update. To mild difficulty where I would be fixing bugs that were on the current page to help prevent page errors and improve the user experience. As well as this I would help with user interface updates, where I would make sure the page is saving the information properly, displaying the appropriate fields at the appropriate time, making sure the layout of the page is up to the standard of the company. As well as making sure the page was properly functioning and alerting the user of any errors/missing fields that they may have had. My attached screenshot is just one of the many pages I helped with. To the hard projects, such as conversion of pages to Angular, where the page would be completely modernized and updated.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned a lot about Javascript, Visual Basic, C#, CSS. I gained some experience in Angular and SQL and look forward to getting more work and experience with these languages. As well as this, I was able to sharpen my Regex and command line skills. Overall helping introduce me into the web programming world, not only building my skills in this area but created it.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I really enjoyed how rounded of an experience I had as a programmer, they let me work on multiple pages throughout the website, they had me learn multiple languages. I have learned a lot of back end and front end skills, this is something I feel very few developers have had experience with. I feel I can say I had experienced working with every part of a page development process, which I just feel is a rare experience.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience has reaffirmed my desire to obtain a job in the software field. I hope to continue with this type of work for years to come.
