Description of the Organization
Mercy Health Saint Mary's (MHSM) is a faith-based organization that not only focuses on medical problems internally but also aims at bettering the communities by participating and hosting outreach events. MHSM is a part of Trinity Health which is the fourth largest Catholic health care systems in the country. It is non-profit; I worked at Clinica Santa Maria which helps the undeserved community of Latinos, migrant workers, etc.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I helped with outreach events and programs that were hosted by Clinica Santa Maria. I also helped to finish an application for a grant that will help bring a maternal infant health program on board at the clinic. We hope that the program will grow after starting at the clinic.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I think that the biggest skill I gained from working here was that I became more independent. The supervisor is not constantly checking on you to see that you have something to do. She actually pushes you to be more independent and willing to find work.
Favorite Part of the Experience
I would have to say that helping host the OB-GYN baby shower for expectant mothers was my favorite. This was such a rewarding experience and I hope I can continue to volunteer here even though I have completed my internship.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
I would say that it exposed me to many new situations and conflicts that patients face daily; I was able to be more open-minded about problems in everyday life. I think that anyone who goes into healthcare needs to have an open mind, because every patient is different and requires different resources. This internship helped me learn more about that.
