Experience Information

Employer: applied Medical Device Institute
Job Title: Electrical Engineer
Major: Electrical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

aMDI is a small, though growing non-instructional unit within the College of Engineering and Computing here at GVSU. We focus on medical device development and R&D to meet our client's needs. The team is comprised mostly of engineering students who work alongside other professional engineers. On occasion, we can join GVSU professors to bring their expertise to our projects.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

This semester I was able to develop an attachment for the sensor package EmotiBit. This package contains a variety of sensors containing photoplethysmography, thermistors, electrodermal activity, accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, etc. This attachment helps visualize all the data without the need for wifi/Bluetooth. A variety of approaches were used to calculate Heart Rate, Heart Rate Variability, and Oxygen Saturation with the available data.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I was able to gain insight into how to use a variety of microcontroller units (MCUs) and development platforms to develop modular hardware and software.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part about this co-op term was the ability to apply closely the different topics learned in the classroom.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I have known that I want to pursue a career in embedded system development (MCUs, FPGAs, DSPs, etc), but working on this project almost daily has solidified that decision further despite its challenges.
