Description of the Organization

Shape Corporation primarily manufactures bumper systems for automobiles. They are a global leader in impact energy management systems that protect pedestrians, vehicles, and occupants. Shape specializes in advanced roll forming and injection molding. Shape has facilities located in North America, Asia, and Europe with its headquarters located in Grand Haven, Michigan.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I worked as part of the Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Team at Shape. Tasks included conducting simulations of various tests with finite element analysis software, applying meshes to models of bumper systems and other components for various simulations, and characterizing and validating material cards for use with different solvers. During my experience I was also able to write guidelines for setting up certain types of simulations. Many of my other projects also focused on improving correlation between physical tests and simulations. I was also able to watch many of the physical tests I had setup simulations of.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

Skills gained included using the software HyperWorks for pre-processing and post-processing simulations and using the solver LS DYNA. I learned how to characterize materials for use with the solvers LS DYNA and PAMCRASH.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I really enjoyed being able to see a physical test and then conduct a simulation and have the ability to make note of differences between the two. It was always interesting working on correlation projects where I had to compare results and determine why the simulation was different than the physical test. One of my favorite correlation projects allowed me to design a couple of fixtures for a test, run the simulation on the test, and then have the testing department build those fixtures and conduct the test.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

From my experience at Shape Corporation I know I would like to continue working with FEA software throughout my career. I would occasionally get projects that weren't of a typical test conducted on a certain component and as a result there was always something new to learn or a new challenge to overcome. Working as a member of the CAE team allowed me to work with people in various sections of the company and also allowed me to interact with people working for Shape in other countries which is one of the reasons I would like to continue to pursue FEA in the future.
