My Summer in JCI Interiors

Experience Information

Employer: Johnson Controls
Job Title: Advanced Manufacturing Co-op
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

Johnson Controls Interiors designs and manufactures automotive interiors including: seats, instrument panels, floor consoles, door panels, hard trim, visors, and overhead consoles.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I performed a study on the pressure inside of an injection mold during pack. This will allow the tooling department at JCI to better predict which size molding machine door panels will fit in. This can result in more business won by cutting costs to the customer, and more profit since we can put bigger door panels in smaller machines.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned a lot about plastic injection molding and how the plastic is filled through the cavity. I learned how to act in a professional environment and after running my own project, I learned how to make sure my goals are completed and follow up on tasks assigned to other people about my project.

Favorite Part of the Experience

There were many things that I liked a lot. I thought the project that they gave me was something a real engineer would do. I was treated like a fellow employee and given responsibility as such too. I also liked the people that I worked with. They were a lot of fun, and I could see the passion they had for their job as well as how good of friends they were with other people in the office.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

It will not really influence my career goals, but it gave me the experience and knowledge to use if I get into a product engineering role.
