Experience Information

Employer: Trans-Matic Mfg. Co.
Job Title: Engineering Intern
Major: Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

Trans-matic creates deep drawn metal stampings using a number of different presses that vary in their speed, number of stations, and tonnage. There is a broad spectrum of companies and fields for which they manufacture parts, and they have been around since 1968. Trans-matic has a satellite location in Arizona, as well as a foreign enterprise wholly operated in china. The precision and quality of their stampings, as well as their ability to process them in a timely fashion, has put them on the map as a world leader in the industry.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

During my experience I was given many different tasks. However, the majority of my time was spent learning the system and how to navigate and use their standards by updating part prints. A toolmaker would submit a change to a tool by designating it on the part print, and I would make that necessary change. Also, they would do the same for an entire book, and I would go through the book and update every part that needed it. I also designed many small projects including an automation project, and a threaded rod and its corresponding nut.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I have gained a greater understanding of the ins and outs of Pro-Engineer (creo 1, and creo 2) as far as how to create parts more efficiently, as well as creating detailed drawings of those parts. I have also learned how Trans-matic's numbering system works as well as many things about their standards they use. Additionally, I have taken from this experience the knowledge of how the business of engineering works. From overhearing meetings and sitting in on some myself, I have seen first hand how those in managerial positions handle themselves and the problems given them in a professional manner.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of the co-op experience was going on trips to other companies to see how they operate and being able to compare them to Trans-matic. It made me really appreciate the way that this company is ran and organized when I was able to see things that that company should do better that we excel in.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience has influenced my goals by giving me the experience of working in a well run place. my past experiences have not been as smooth as this, and I could tell that this would be different simply by the looks of the facility. In my future, I will strive to make my workplace a better one in all aspects.
