Description of the Organization

Dewys Manufacturing does sheet metal fabrication of metal less than or equal to 1/2" thick. They are a one-stop shop for customers, offering laser cutting, forming, an in-house powder-coat paint line, and an assembly stage. They service markets such as the medical field to military utilities.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I performed calibrations on tooling as well as measuring equipment. I helped convert from an old tool maintenance database to a new more professional database and wrote all new work instructions on how to calibrate each set of tools that was stored in their ISO standard. I also helped do a return on investment project to help determine if a new program would be worth the investment.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned how to quickly measure parts and work with others to solve the questions when it came to parts that did not conform to what the customer had asked for. I also learned how to use standardized equipment to calibrate an entire shops worth of tooling. I learned how to communicate with customers and employees to solve problems. I also learned how to communicate with co-workers to figure out how to bridge knowledge gaps and complete objectives laid out.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I particularly enjoyed working with corrective actions. While I did not actually document them I did help my supervisor Tom find the root cause of parts that were damaged or did not meet quality standards. It always started a mystery but by looking hard enough and really learning how the parts were made it was easy to pin down where the damage came from.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I understand now that the more complete and well-rounded the approach to a problem is that the faster and easier finding the solution will be. There is no room for ignorance and asking questions that may seem obvious can sometimes yield the fullest understanding. I intend to approach my schooling, my job, and my entire life with the idea that I need to be well rounded and well informed. I hope to be managing someday in the hopes that I will be able to bring that approach to businesses as a whole.
