Experience Information

Employer: Metal Technologies
Job Title: Engineering Co-Op
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

Metal Technologies is a metal casting company that has been in operation since 1997. Ravenna Ductile Iron is a ductile iron foundry that produces a large amount of castings for a variety of customers.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

A majority of my time was spent working on CAD files. I also cleaned and stored the casting tools after they were used, and I sent emails and filed paperwork for the engineering department. I also conducted some reverse-engineering on new parts that were transferred to the foundry.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned some of the intricacies of making cast iron products, such as how the effectiveness of inoculation is affected by material flow. I also learned how to operate a 3D printer. One important takeaway from the whole experience was the importance of communication. Several issues developed because I didn't take the initiative in communicating with my supervisor and coworkers.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I do not particularly have any favorite parts of the job. Everything is about the same in terms of engagement.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience has made me more focused on becoming a process engineer instead of the vague career goals I had when I began my education.
