Description of the Organization

U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga represents the 2nd District of Michigan, which stretches along Lake Michigan from Fennville to Frankfort. He was first elected to Congress in November of 2010. Congressman Huizenga was selected to serve on the House Financial Services Committee and he is the highest-ranking freshman member.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

While in Washington D.C. I had the opportunity to work on many projects. One of the tasks that I enjoyed the most was working with the constituents of the district. Every day I had the opportunity to speak with constituents on the phone, correspond with them through e-mail and letters, welcome them into the office, and guide them around the Capitol. I also had the distinct privilege of attending several briefings and hearings concerning various topics such as financial services, foreign affairs, and policy issues. Often times I would be asked to assist Staffers on researching legislation or standing in on meetings for them.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

Through this experience I was blessed to gain many skills and much knowledge. I was able to sharpen my communication skills as I often spoke with constituents, members of congress, and staffers around the capitol. I also learned a lot of information about the insides of D.C. I learned how an office works and how legislation is truly passed by the House. The most important thing that I learned through this experience is that we live in a great country. A country where constituents can elect their representatives, can protest on the capitol steps, and can truly have their voices heard. I gained a great and very sincere appreciation for the country that we live in.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this experience was working with an awesome office and staff. Congressman Huizenga and his staff run a very productive and enjoyable office. The staff took me in and helped me have a very memorable experience. Even as a freshman office, they are involved in some of the biggest decisions being made in the capitol. I also enjoyed being here for major events such as the ruling on Obamacare, the presidential election, and the contempt on AG Holder. Thanks to my co-workers and Grand Valley, I was able to have a great experience while here in D.C. It is an experience I will never forget.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience has greatly influenced my thinking concerning my future goals. I now know more than ever that I want to work to serve my fellow citizens and serve this great nation. I am fully confident that I am being called to be a leader where I can have an impact on the future of this country. You hear so many negative things said about D.C. but people forget about all of the strong leaders that are here in the Capitol and working to make this nation even stronger. Thanks in large part to this internship I know that with hard work and concentration, my future goals can be reached.
