Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I helped out the market by working the credit card machine and handing tokens out to patrons (to be used as cash in the market). I also contributed by taking photographs, updating the Facebook page and website with bits of information relevant to the farmers market and its products, helping patrons throughout the market, building relations with venders, and studying customer traffic throughout the day.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Because of this internship, I learned more about specific fruits, veggies, and plants, and when they are in season. I also learned about the term "organic" and how it has to be used (or not) on products.
Favorite Part of the Experience
I had a lot of fun seeing the musicians who would come to the market (especially when members of the Cirque Du Soleil came!), plus the yummy foods were delicious. I especially loved the bagels, energy bars and other baked goods, and the raspberry jalapeno jam!
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
The other spring semester intern and I, as part of our requirement for credit for anthropology, had to do a market assessment at the end of our internship. This included studying market traffic once an hour, every hour, to see how it reflected market business. We also asked customers to answer some questions for us about how far they traveled to come to the market, the types of products they liked, the amount of money they planned on spending at the market, etc. It would really informant, and interesting observing the different crowds that come into and enjoy the Fulton Street Farmers Market.
