Description of the Organization

Metal Technologies, Inc. is a global metal casting company that offers high quality parts and value-added processes for a variety of industries. Ravenna Ductile Iron is MTI's branch in Ravenna, Michigan.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

Working alongside the Process Engineer I worked on designing and improving patterns. These patterns are attached to a giant machine called the DISAMATIC(video) that compresses and makes impressions in a special type of sand. Molten metal is poured into these molds. After cooling the solid metal part comes out at the other end.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

Creating the patterns in the CAD program called Pro-E. Learning how the flowing and the cooling of molten metal works inside a mold. Handling and maintenance of the patterns. Driving fork-trucks.

Favorite Part of the Experience

Watching something I made with a computer program get built, and then seeing it being used to make hundreds of castings.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

The fascinating technology that goes into making a simple part out of metal has inspired me to keep pursuing the field of engineering and someday come up with such an efficient system, either in different application, or improving the current metal casting technology.
