Description of the Organization
Phase 1 Engineering is a small engineering consulting firm. This company takes on jobs from larger companies when they need help with product development or advise with how to solve a problem.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
While working there as a Computer Engineering major, I was able to push myself through being introduced to projects that were outside of my discipline. For example, I was able to work on a contract basis with a customer to study thermal engineering. This allowed them to develop a new product based off my work. However, I was also pushed within my own discipline through teaching myself a new programming language to write a data analysis tool.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
The specific skills I gained from my experience were learning how to program in python, learning how to preform light thermal analysis, learning advanced soldering techniques, learning the business aspect that goes into engineering R&D, and more.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of my co-op experience was learning how aspects of business come into play with engineering R&D. Since Phase 1 Engineering is quite small, we get plenty of one on one time with clients who come to us. This means we have to take our engineering knowledge and apply it in a business setting to deliver what our clients want.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has influenced my future career goals through motivating me to branch out into other disciplines of engineering. Through working at Phase 1 Engineering, I was forced to become a creative thinker and draw from other fields of engineering to solve my problems at work; consequently, this made me realize the importance of keeping your knowledge diverse because it helps me retain the ability to be a creative thinker.
