Description of the Organization

The Hanover Insurance Group is based in Worcester, Massachusetts, and is a Fortune 500 company focusing on property and causality insurance. The company was founded in 1852 and has grown immensely since the start and has about 4,600 employees and conducts business in 42 different states. The Hanover Insurance Group takes pride in its C.A.R.E values, which are Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Empowerment, and it's demonstrated through everyone in the corporation and their work.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

As an intern, I participated in various tasks and projects within the department I was with and with other interns in the company. I was able to help understand and come up with solutions and recommendations regarding an enterprise-wide SharePoint site, so conducting interviews and an electronic survey was how I gained feedback and insight into the usage of the site. I also was able to help design learning modules and participate in the discussions. I also helped locate and identify numerous black-owned insurance agencies to expand on its diversity efforts. With other interns, we collaborated and created a grant proposal for a generous donation to a non-profit organization focused on providing housing and shelters for homeless, low-income, and battered women in the community.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

From this experience, I've had immense growth of skills and knowledge professionally and personally. In addition, using many Microsoft platforms such as SharePoint, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Teams daily have helped me gain proficient usage skills and knowledge about each one. As a result, I have a deeper understanding of the Insurance industry as a whole and an internal view of sales and distribution. I also have developed greater confidence, communication skills, problem-solving, and collaboration skills during my time as an intern.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this internship was working on the community intern project, in which we come up with a grant request for a non-profit organization. Then, within a smaller group of interns, we communicated with a spokesperson from the organization and listened to their daily problems. It was empowering to help and donate a generous amount of money to this organization, knowing it was all for a good cause!

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience influenced my future career goals by having exposure to Hanover's strong company culture and the focus on its company values. It showed me how essential the work environment is, and everyone wants to build each other up and succeed. Seeing how everyone demonstrates the company values really made me step up and deliver my best work, which I would want in a future company. Also, seeing how much they give back to non-profit organizations in their community showed me how important it is to help others in need.
