Envirotronics gives practical experience!

Experience Information

Employer: Envirotronics
Job Title: Engineering Intern
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

Envirotronics produces environmental test chambers that other companies use to test their equipment under varying environmental conditions. The company is mostly known for its custom chambers that it designs to meet specific needs of customers instead of having large lines of standard chambers. Also known for their excellent service on their and competitors chambers.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I started out by going through a lot of the old prints and updating scrap costs. By doing so I began to understand how they organized their prints. I did some cataloging of parts which helped me to understand how important correctly labeling parts is. I also did some excel documents that dealt specifically with engineering calculations. I did some designing of simple parts that were to be used on projects using AutoCAD and Pro E. Using those same programs I redesigned a few chambers so that they could be sent out for customer approval (mostly editing the drawings and parts, not actual design work). I also did a lot of dimensioning/editing of drawings for other engineers.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

Much better understanding of dimensioning drawings. Learned how to deal with production to correctly design parts for them to produce. Learned how to use AutoCAD and became more proficient with Pro E. Also learned how to understand refrigeration and electrical schematics for chambers a lot better than before.

Favorite Part of the Experience

Redesigning assembly drawings so that we could get customer approval. Almost everything I did made me feel like I was actually helping the company produce chambers or simplify their workload.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

Envirotronics gave me valuable experience in dealing with many different aspects of engineering. It was nice to see practical application of some of the things that I learned in class but also at the same time realizing that I will learn far more when I actually am doing the work. I had never considered doing environmental chambers before working here but they are a lot more interesting once you start to deal with all of the subtle intricacies. I know I will already be paying more attention in classes that will deal with what I need to use at this company.
