Description of the Organization

JR Automation, as suggested by the name, is a company that specializes in the design, creation, and implementation of automation and machines to be used by other companies. These projects allow JR to help increase the productivity and efficiency of other companies and has the benefit of removing dangerous and hazardous working conditions for any customer employees.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

During my time as an AE, my main focus during training was learning how to quote an automation project (it always costs far more than what you think it will). Within this field, I also worked on concepting of these projects, as well as virtual simulation of potential designs. As an ME, my main focus during training was to learn how to refine the initial designs of the AE's in order to make consistent, safe, and reliable piece of automation. Various smaller tasks include, but are not limited to: creating/checking prints/details, product design, machining, etc.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

Through my AE experience, I learned how to incorporate similar designs into present quotes and working with other manufacturers in order to come up with the best possible quote for a project. I also learned how to use virtual software such as SolidWorks and Visual Components in order to create and simulate potential designs to test them for functionality and cycle time. As an ME, I learned how to take these designs and refine them into working and intricate models that would be purchased, machined, and installed in working order. This involved using Creo/SolidWorks software for 3D modeling and drafting purposes, outside vendors and suppliers for purchased part orders, and machining parts that needed changes on the floor. This is only the top level aspects of this position that was learned, there is far more that comes with the position.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite parts of this job mainly consisted of the 3D design and modeling portion of the position. I loved creating something and tweaking it until it was next to perfect or better, it is an incredibly satisfying feeling. The simulation aspect of the AE job as well was incredibly interesting. Another aspect that I enjoyed was assembling pieces of machinery that I had virtually worked on and designed/detailed.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This position has opened my eyes to a lot of the do's and dont's of the real world. Talking with co-workers is an extremely beneficial aspect that everyone should have the chance to do, even outside of your immediate department. I will also continue to strive for similar workplace goals aligning with the aspects noted in the section above.
