Vention Medical Internship

Experience Information

Employer: Vention Medical
Job Title: Project Management Intern
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

Vention Medical is a company that manufactures medical devices. A majority of the devices made at the Grand Rapids facility are disposable devices, which get used once then are disposed of properly.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

The project that I was assigned to was to work with a team of engineers to build a device that attaches to and endoscopic camera which doctors can use to implant 5 running stitches in a patients digestive tract. The majority of my time was spent working on paperwork, laser welding components, and documenting testing data.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

With this internship I have gained knowledge about the engineering process. I observed how projects are set to a strict timeline and everyone does as much as they can to keep on track. I got really good at documentation and data taking and worked with other engineers to improve the process. I also got to problem solve different solutions to production problems.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of the co-op experience was working as a team to find, design, and implement solutions to problems that arose during the tooling design process. Since what we were originally using did not work properly we had to think outside the box in order to determine a solution and fix the problem.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience made me ready to finish school and find a job in the biomedical engineering world. I am excited to start my career trying to improve or design a medical device. Talking with the customers I believe that I would like to go into orthopedics someday because it requires knowledge in both mechanical and biomedical engineering.
