Elections Intern

Experience Information

Employer: Ottawa County
Job Title: Elections Intern
Major: Political Science
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

The organization I worked for was the Ottawa County Clerk's office, and it has 4 supervisors and about 10 employees.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I helped prepare for and run elections happening within Ottawa County. This included sending local clerks supplies, registering voters, creating plans and FAQs for the upcoming elections, and helping my boss, the Elections Coordinator manage election days.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned how to work with elected officials both at the local and the county level. I also learned how to better use Excel and Visme, as we used those programs for most of our operations. I learned specific laws regarding voter rights and retention dates for election materials.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part was having creative freedom to make graphics and posts regarding voter rights and information. Some of the graphics I have created are being shared statewide, as they pertain to Proposal 18-3 from last November.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This internship has showed me that I want to work for county or local administration, as the administration side of things is much more enjoyable to me than the political side.
