Description of the Organization

The Office of Student-Athlete Welfare and Development (SAW-D) is committed to the student-athlete by cultivating critical life skills which will prepare them for life after sports. The Office of Athletic Compliance ensures that student-athletes are compliant with NCAA and GVSU rules to stay eligible for competition. The SAW-D office contains just two workers, including myself, and the Athletic Compliance office contains three, including myself. We oversee around 650 student-athletes.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

During this internship I helped manage the compliance of 650 student-athletes, made sure all Name, Image, and Likeness deals were compliant with NCAA, GVSU, and State of Michigan bylaws, keep the websites up to date, and helped students find resources to land a job or internship.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned some valuable skills that will help me in my career during this internship. I learned how to use multiple programs such as the NCAA Compliance Assistant, IRL, INFLCR, NCAA Eligibility Center, and CMS. These are all programs that are used widely in the industry and most employers want prior knowledge of these programs when starting a position.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this internship was working with lots of different people in the athletic department and seeing lots of different parts of the machine. While working in Student-Athlete Welfare & Development and Compliance, I was also able to see some aspects of marketing, the Laker Academic Success Center, and even event operations. This experience showed me how close all the departments work together.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience greatly influenced my future career goals. When starting this internship, I still wasnýt exactly sure what I wanted to do in the future, but this experience set me up for a career that I am excited about. I figured out that this is the career path that I want to pursue and it allowed me to use this internship to invest in my future and get some great experience.
