Description of the Organization
Midway Machine Technologies is a small business of about 50 employees and is located in Zeeland MI. Midway designs and builds specialized equipment primarily for the food, pharmaceutical, and automotive industries.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I worked as a student engineer at Midway. My job was to prepare operational manuals for all the equipment that was designed and built. This required me to have extensive knowledge in the mechanical function of all equipment I was assigned to. I also had to review equipment models/drawings to ensure no parts would interfere with one another and that proper GD&T was practiced.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Through this experience, I discovered how important the transfer of information from the manufacture to the customer is. Throughout this experience, I learned the skills to best convey this information. I also discovered that the definition of the "best" can change depending on what information needs to be conveyed.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this experience was getting involved in all of the builds that were occurring in the shop. It gave me an opportunity to see how the equipment works and why the senior engineers designed the equipment that way.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
The co-op experience has made me more comfortable about entering the engineering work force after I graduate. I can go into the engineering field confident that I can get the job done.
