Description of the Organization

Vention Medical is a medical device assembly company. Its main divisions include product design and development, component manufacturing, and molding and device assembly. I worked in the assembly side, in which companies give specifications and bills of material for their products, and we assemble them and ship out a final product.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I worked mostly investigating and dealing with customer quality complaints, such as assemblies and devices not meeting specifications. Problems were investigated by thoroughly testing each part of the devices. Testing often involved having to design new and unique measurement methods and fixtures. Once the cause of the problems were found, I would help come up with solutions and have them implemented as soon as possible.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned a lot about statistical analysis, designing fixtures and measurement methods, machining, good documentation practices, and a heightened attention to detail(Medical devices are held to very tight tolerances and standards because they are directly used on people).

Favorite Part of the Experience

I liked the work, but really my favorite part was just the environment. I made a lot of friends and everyone was always willing to share whatever knowledge they had for any problems. I learned a lot and look forward to the next term.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

It was has made me more interested in the design side of engineering. I really enjoyed designing fixtures and measurement methods, and I feel that this experience in a more manufacturing oriented environment really helps with my understanding on how things work.
