Job Title: Electrical Engineer Co-op
Major: Computer Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes

Description of the Organization

Phase 1 Engineering (P1E) is an engineering consulting firm composed of less than 20 employees. P1E works on projects related to embedded systems, RF antenna design, and software applications in automotive, medical, and other industries.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

One project I completed involved developing a Python application that would automate the testing of motors and log data from them into csv files. Another project I completed was a Modbus application that posed as an industrial controller to test a VFD drive board. I also worked on a software application that had web-app elements on both the front-end and back-end.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained additional knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus and learned how to interface it with Python applications. I also learned more about proper Python application programming practices and the use of multithreading to solve complex requirements. Finally, I gained experience and knowledge of software web-app development on both front-end and back-end sides in addition to using web-based server hosts.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this co-op rotation was the freedom that I had when developing our Python applications. I was able to experiment with different program structures and have complete freedom with designing the user interfaces.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

The third rotation has provided further insight on what it is like to work as a professional engineer. It also taught me a lot about large software design and app development in industry, and how what I would need to know to pursue a career in the topics.
