Trane BAS Internship

Experience Information

Employer: Trane
Job Title: Graphics Engineer
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

Trane deals with the implementation of HVAC systems in industrial and residential locations. The department I worked in, the Building Automation systems (BAS) deals with floor plan modifications and system design to implement the project into the building.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I had the opportunity to work on graphics for each job. Through the use of Photoshop, I created floor plans, where I then inserted the components, such as air handlers, VAVs, heaters, and coils. The components of the air handlers and water systems were also created in Photoshop, which would be later used as the basis for the building controls in Summit and SC automation.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

Reading mechanical specification sheet and floor plan blueprints was a large portion of successfully completing the graphics for each job. Additionally, how to successfully interact with fellow engineers, superiors, and sometimes customers. Staying on top of your work, planning out each day, and working hard were also skills that were refined.

Favorite Part of the Experience

The work environment had a huge impact on productivity, and set the mood for each work day. Everyone in my department was lighthearted, quick to joke around and slow to get upset. They were quick to answer questions, and actually cared about my learning. It was as if I were a part of the team rather than just "the intern".

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

It has really made the thought of working 40 hours a week for the next 40 years less terrifying. I really enjoyed this semester. It isn't necessarily in the branch of mechanical engineering that I was hoping for (HVAC), but it gave me experience and the mindset to succeed in future endeavors.
