Description of the Organization

The Kent County Sheriff's Department is the law enforcement agency for the rural portions of Kent County. The Road Patrol Unit patrols rural areas of the county that are not patrolled by any local police agencies. The Kent County Sheriff's Department also handles the correctional facility for all law enforcement agencies within the county. Kent County also has its own detective bureau and dispatch center.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

As an Intern, I was assigned to various shifts with various departments to perform an observation of those departments. The departments I observed were the road patrol unit, the correctional facility, detective bureau, and dispatch. During each shift I would be assigned to a deputy to observe. At the end of each shift I would complete an observation log. On road patrol shifts I would also completely a daily log of what took place during that shift.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained fist hand knowledge on how the Kent county Sheriff's Department performs various aspects of their duties. I was able to learn how each part of the Sheriff's Department connects, and must work together. I also learned how working in law enforcement affects those who I observed.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part was being able to see how each deputy performed their duty, and how each deputy handled each situation a little differently based on their experiences, this particular situation, and their use of discretion.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This internship has helped me evaluate from a first person observation, if law enforcement is the career path for me.
