Physical Activity, Mobility and Quality of Life of Adolescents with Physical Disabilities: A Function of Family Physical Activity

A research study led by Dr. Krisanne Chapin and Dr. Colleen Lewis, of the Movement Science department at Grand Valley State University.

You are invited to participate in a survey study of the relationship between a family’s level of physical activity and that of an adolescent member of the family with physical disability, and that young person’s quality of life. Should you choose to participate, you would be asked some questions about your level of physical activity. Then your child or adolescent with a physical disability would be asked to answer questions about their physical activity level, their mobility and their quality of life. If present in the family, a sibling would also be invited to participate and answer questions about physical activity and mobility.

To participate in the study, your family must include:

  • A child/adolescent with a physical disability and between 10 and 17 years of age
    • Physical disability must have been present for at least 1 year
    • No diagnosis of intellectual disability or Autism Spectrum Disorder
    • No visual or other sensory disability
  • A parent or guardian (age > 18 years) of the adolescent with a physical disability
  • One or more other adolescent siblings without a physical disability between the ages of 10 and 17

The surveys are online, and completion should take ~5-10 minutes for each member of the family participating. After completion of the survey, you will have the option to enter your email address and the first 100 families to do so will receive a $25 Amazon electronic gift card to thank you for your participation. To learn more, and possibly participate, please click on the link below to view the consent and begin the survey. This research has been approved by the Institutional Review Boards of GVSU (#####).
