Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon for Social Justice: Celebrating Women and LGBTQIA+ Activists

Wikimedia’s difficulties in representing topics related to gender, race, and nationality are well-documented. While the reasons for the gaps are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female, queer, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge. The GVSU Libraries are hosting this event in an attempt to help address these issues and to broaden the community base of Wikipedians! YOU can be a Wikipedian!

The edit-a-thon will take place online and you are free to come and go during the event. We will provide editing and troubleshooting support, as well as starting points through both library and open access resources to build up articles related to women and LGBTQIA+ activists. All are welcome, regardless of identity and experience with editing Wikipedia! New editors are encouraged to work through our Editing Wikipedia Training videos listed on the Wiki Dashboard prior to the start of the edit-a-thon. Email Sheila García ([email protected]) to RSVP and receive the Zoom event link.
