Social Media, Free Speech, and the Disinformation Age

Recent events, such as new tech company censorship policies, the banning of Donald Trump and many of his supporters from social media platforms, and the announcement of the proposed "Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act of 2021," suggest that we are heading for another period in American life of skepticism toward the core First Amendment principles that lie at the heart of our constitutional order. In this webinar Prof Goetting will argue that radically protecting the quintessentially American right of freedom of expression -  best expressed by  lawyer and theorist Thomas I. Emerson during and after the McCarthy witch hunts -  is what's most necessary to preserve a free and open society now and into the future.

Panelists: Nathan Goetting, Professor and Constitutional Law Scholar
Moderator: Michael DeWilde, Director, Koeze Business Ethics Initiative

Biography: Professor Goetting was Editor-in-Chief of National Lawyers Guild Review for ten years and currently serves as Articles Editor. Under his leadership NLGR was ranked the #4 Constitutional Law journal in the 2013-2014 ExpressO Law Review Submissions Guide. He writes and teaches in the areas of constitutional law and civil liberties.

Professor Goetting has taught at the University of Toledo College of Law, The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, and Western Michigan University Cooley Law School. His writings have been cited in Harvard Law & Policy Review; Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law & Justice; and University of Colorado Law Review among other scholarly publications. He is the 2016 recipient Adrian College’s Creative Activity, Research, and Scholarship Award (faculty-wide for best contribution to one’s field).

Professor Goetting lives in Adrian, Michigan with his wife, Amanda; his sons, Lucas and Samuel; and his dogs, Emile and Kaiser.
