10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Protecting Trees from Invasive Species with Lawrence Burns and Alexandra Locher
Our forests are in trouble. In particular, three dominant tree species (i.e., Eastern hemlock, American beech, red oak) in the dune systems of west Michigan are threatened by invasive species including hemlock woolly adelgid, beech bark disease, and oak wilt. Our forests are the reason we are able to experience life as we know it. We cannot expect to keep enjoying pristine walks, clean air, water, wildlife, or refuge from daily stresses under the shelter of trees without respecting and protecting the ecosystems and organisms within them who provide those gifts. It is only through connection and reciprocity that we can sustain our relationship with forests that provide so much to us. By understanding insults threatening our forests and taking action to remove those insults, we hopefully can restore and protect these beautiful dune systems.

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Lunch break

12:30 - 2:00 p.m. Critical Race Theory Part 1 with Fred Johnson
