Structural racism. Inequality. Bias. While the United States has made significant improvements towards creating a more equal and just society, deep divides remain — especially for communities of color. With a growing plethora of social, cultural, and political divides that make it difficult to talk across differences, Americans are asking, “how can we begin to bridge these divides wounding our nation?” Having lived her life with the impact and consequences of racism, renowned political scientist Terri Givens calls for ‘radical empathy’ in the face of increasing polarization.

In partnership with the Padnos/Sarosik Center for Civil Discourse, the Hauenstein Center welcomes Dr. Terri Givens to Grand Valley State University for the Eighth Annual Civil Discourse Symposium. Weaving personal experience with political realities, Givens offers steps to address racism and bring forth radical change by managing our own biases.
