ESSU Discussion With Julien Delvat, An SAP Mentor - 03/29/2017

This meeting began at 6:05 p.m. in the Seidman Forum. ESSU was excited to have Julien Delvat give us presentation on a wide range of topics. Julien is currently a Principal Consultant for SAP S/4HANA Bluefin Solutions. More specifically, he is a S/4HANA Center of Excellence lead in the financial area in which he travels globally to serve a diverse group of clients.
Julien noted his education background in France and explained his journey into the SAP field. He was as developer for SAP early in his career and that eventually lead him to pursue a career as a consultant. He also noted how he would like to one day teach ERP/SAP in higher education.
Like his own career path, Julien told the students that careers can take multiple trajectories. Julien also had some book recommendations to share. The first book is called “Good to Great” which does an excellent job of explaining the Hedgehog Strategy. Julien told us to build a niche around what we are good at and what we enjoy. The second book is “Toyota Way to Lean Leadership” which supports Julien’s belief that we should become “T-type” leaders who develop like a tree. First we should build core competencies in a particular area known as deep routed expertise and then later, we can broaden our leadership skills.
The other part of Julien’s presentation was about creating our personal brand using social media. He showed us some examples on how to be different and offer something new. He also shared a LinkedIn post he created which goes further into how to create a social media strategy.
The last part of the presentation included a Q&A. Some of Julien’s responses were about how manufacturing and API’s will be a future trend in technology and also talked about how to communicate with customers from different counties by being able to perceive their culture and priorities.
