Social Work Community Comes Together for Annual Stakeholder Convening
Published August 5, 2026 by Vicky Wright
The Grand Valley State University School of Social Work welcomed faculty, students, alumni, field instructors, employers, and community partners for its Annual Social Work Convening, bringing together the many voices that help shape social work education.
The day began with a welcome from Dr. Cray Mulder, Director of the School of Social Work, who recognized the broad representation in the room. The gathering served as a reminder that preparing the next generation of social workers is a shared responsibility, made possible through the commitment and partnership of individuals and organizations that contribute to social work education.
A primary purpose of the convening was to engage stakeholders in meaningful dialogue as the School of Social Work prepares for its upcoming accreditation site visit. Dr. Jamie Langlois, Social Work Accreditation Coordinator, reviewed the accreditation process, recent program changes designed to maintain excellence and compliance, and assessment data highlighting student learning and program outcomes. Through table discussions and report-outs, attendees shared valuable feedback that will help guide the continued growth and improvement of both the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) programs.
Attendees also participated in a professional learning session, Fostering Opportunities for Inclusive Communication, presented by Dr. Chastity Bailey Fakhoury, Associate Dean and Associate Professor in Grand Valley's College of Education and Community Innovation, and Dr. Laila McCloud, Associate Professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration. Their presentation explored generational awareness and strategies for fostering inclusive communication while encouraging participants to consider how understanding generational perspectives can strengthen relationships with colleagues, students, and clients in the workplace.
The Annual Social Work Convening reflects the School of Social Work's commitment to collaboration, continuous improvement, and community engagement. By bringing together current students, faculty, alumni, employers, site supervisors, social workers, and community partners, the convening strengthens the relationships and understanding to prepare graduates to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this year’s convening. Your partnership continues to strengthen the School of Social Work and the future of the profession.
