Student Scholarships

Each year, GVSU Education Program students receive substantial financial support through scholarships reserved for students pursuing a career in the field of education.

  • During the 2020-2021 school year, 23 students received Education Program scholarships - a total of $43,950 
  • During the 2019-2020 school year, 30 students received Education Program scholarships - a total of $42,700

Scholarship Application Information

Candidates in both initial certification and graduate programs are eligible to apply. These scholarship opportunities are made possible by the generosity of individuals and organizations dedicated to the preparation of high-quality educators.

Please note that an essay is required for most Education Program scholarships. Each essay should describe how the particular scholarship will benefit you and should address the specific eligibility criteria for the scholarship.

Criteria for Applying
  • Full-time undergraduate students who complete their Teaching Apprenticeship or Student Teaching Internship at a GVSU-authorized charter public school in West Michigan; or their Student Teaching Internship at a GVSU-authorized charter public school in Detroit.
  • Clinical field experiences must be completed at a GVSU-authorized charter public school in Detroit or West Michigan.
  • Must be accepted by GVSU’s College of Education and Community Innovation to complete your Teacher Apprenticeship or Student Teaching Internship in Birth to Kindergarten, Elementary, Secondary, or Special Education during the semester for which you apply for the scholarship.
  • Students participating in a Study Abroad Program during the same semester are not eligible to apply. 

Students from all Teacher Education Programs are encouraged to apply.  

Completing a Clinical Field Experience at a GVSU-authorized charter public school opens the door for potential long-term benefits such as:

  • Potential for immediate employment at a GVSU-authorized charter public school
  • 50% tuition scholarship for graduate courses at GVSU, if eligibly employed at a GVSU-authorized charter public school

PLEASE NOTE: The GVSU Charter Public Schools Clinical Field Experience Scholarship application must be completed by completing the application form. Submission of the application does not guarantee receipt of a scholarship. Scholarships are limited and based on several criteria, including the availability of an appropriate placement, qualified mentor teacher, financial need, and program-level distribution.
