Rachel Campbell, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and the CLAS Voyage Curriculum Director. Prior to joining the CLAS Voyage team, she was a member of the Faculty Teaching and Learning Center Advisory Committee, the Executive Committee to the University Senate, and the CLAS Curriculum Committee. She has also acted as editor and co-editor of the Michigan Sociological Review. Rachel earned her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Alberta. Before joining GVSU, she worked as a Project Coordinator and Research Associate on projects ranging from an exploration of the social support needs of unhoused youth to the creation of career resources for women in Science, Engineering, and Technology fields. 

Rachel has long been committed to experiential and community-engaged learning, leading student groups and courses in undertaking projects with both campus and community partners. In collaboration with Drs. Amanda Buday and Anna Hammersmith, Rachel is also an active member of the GVSU Social Science Lab, in particular the creation and instruction of a Citizen Social Science training for community members in Muskegon Heights, MI that has recently been published. With the CLAS Voyage team, Rachel has presented at multiple national conferences. Today, the primary focus of her work in the classroom, with the CLAS Voyage, and in her scholarship, is ensuring that students have opportunities to apply their learning, reflect on their experiences, and translate their knowledge for their next destinations.
