Edward Cardenas
Edward serves on the Community Engagement Committee.
Edward Cardenas is an award-winning communicator who has worked on both sides of the notebook on stories that give readers, listeners, colleagues and viewers a new perspective, a little laugh, or just a better understanding of the community where they live and their dworkplace.
As a reporter with The Detroit News, digital editor with WWJ Radio and editor with Patch.com, he covered a wide-range of local, regional and national stories from small businesses openings to the rebirth of Detroit; astronauts heading to the Mir space station to military deployments during the War On Terror; and even being embedding with the stage crew for the Rolling Stones halftime show during the Super Bowl XL.
He also has held lead communication roles with Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Congresswoman Candice Miller in their press offices where he helped craft their messaging to the communities they served and helped constituents with their needs.
In his current role as the Global Communication and Reporting Manager for Stellantis Philanthropy, the philanthropic arm of automaker Stellantis, Edward has drawn upon his experience in public relations and the media to help establish this newly formed effort to support STEM education in communities where the company operates and develop a robust internal and external audiences communications plan.
Previously, Edward was the North American Internal Communications Content Manager for Stellantis where he contributed to the development and implementation of a new employee Intranet portal; provided content to the company’s various social platfromrs; and drafted executive communications including speeches, town hall scripts and employee correspondence.
In each of these positions, he has brought professional acumen, knowledge acquired at Grand Valley State University, and an ability to pivot to be responsive to an ever-changing media landscape to the workplace.
Edward, who was active in a variety of clubs, organizations and student government during his time at GVSU, received his B.A. in International Relations from GVSU in 1995 and has remained active with the university as an alumnus as an alumni ambassador, emcee for the university’s 50th anniversary celebration in Detroit, and member of the GVSU CLAS Advisory Board.
