Preparing for Advising & Registration

The following items are steps you can take in order to prepare for your Freshman Advising & Registration Session. On your session day, you will be part of a group of about 10 fellow students, along with a faculty member, a professional advisor, and two experienced undergraduates. You'll learn more about academics, life at GVSU, curriculum requirements, and register for your classes.

Send official transcripts from all colleges you may have attended, including dual enrollment or middle college courses.

If you plan to take a math placement exam, please do so at least 24 hours prior to attending your Advising & Registration Session. The test can be found at http://gvsu.edu/s/U3

All incoming first-year students who studied a foreign language in high school are encouraged to take a short language placement evaluation as part of their registration process. You will be offered the opportunity to take the 15-minute evaluation on your registration day; you need not study or prepare for this process. Some information about the value of learning a foreign language can be found at www.gvsu.edu/mll/WhyLanguage.

Consider your options for your first-year writing course. Further information regarding writing course options can be found here.

Become familiar with the general education requirements. Course descriptions and requirement information can be found at gvsu.edu/gened/general-education-handbook-266.htm

Preview the fall and winter class schedule at gvsu.edu/schedule. You will select classes at your Advising & Registration Session.

If you have determined a major, become familiar with major requirements at gvsu.edu/catalog.
