Preparing for Advising & Registration

The following items are steps you can take in order to prepare for your Freshman Advising & Registration Session

All Advising & Registration appointments will be held online through individual video-conference appointments. This will provide customized and one-on-one guidance for each new Laker. Our expert staff and faculty advisors will work with you to ensure you are ready to begin your academic journey as Lakers with the right fall and winter class schedule. For an online Advising & Registration session, you will need a computer or tablet with stable internet access that you can use for an online appointment on your registration day. Your advisor will contact you via email 3-4 business days prior to your registration day to set a time for your appointment; please plan on 60-90 minutes for your appointment.

Send official transcripts from all colleges you may have attended, including dual enrollment or middle college courses.

Contact your institution and request they send an official transcript to:

Registrar's Office
150 Student Services
1 Campus Drive
Allendale, MI 49401

If the institution you attended sends electronic transcripts, you can request they send your official electronic transcripts to Grand Valley at: adm-transcripts@gvsu.edu.

If your math placement is anything other than “MTH 122 & MTH 123 Fulfilled”, you can and should try to update your placement by taking one or more online proficiency tests. You should take your test(s) at least 48 hours prior to your registration appointment.  New students are automatically added to the testing system upon registering for orientation.

More information about MTH proficiency tests is available at http://gvsu.edu/s/U3. If you plan to take a math placement exam, please do so at least 24 hours prior to attending your Advising & Registration Session.

Because language study is required for all Bachelor of Arts degrees, as well as several additional programs of study, students who have previously studied a modern or classical language are strongly encouraged to take the language placement evaluation to find where to begin their language study. Please complete any language placement evaluations by 48 hours before your registration appointment. Information about foreign language offerings and how to make arrangements for a language placement evaluation before your registration can be found  here.

Consider your options for your first-year writing course. Further information regarding writing course options can be found here.

Become familiar with the general education requirements. Course descriptions and requirement information can be found at gvsu.edu/gened/general-education-handbook-266.htm
