Healthcare Leadership Graduate Certificate at Grand Valley State University.

Overview

The Healthcare Leadership graduate certificate is designed to meet the need of middle managers in healthcare settings, including clinicians gaining new administrative responsibilities. Clinical education rarely incorporated necessary content related to important administrative and organizational decision making. People working in lower level administrative roles who are promoted into supervisory and management position often lack access to relevant training regarding their new job responsibilities.

The curriculum illustrates the introductory nature of the certificate. Most Master's in Health Administration (M.H.A.) competencies are introduced, but are not covered or assessed to the same degree as in the graduate degree. Since the certificate will be stackable into the M.H.A. program, it is necessary to measure all health administration competencies to ensure students who convert from the certificate to the degree have been assessed for all competencies in the same courses as in the M.H.A. for accreditation purposes. The M.H.A. is accredited by CAHME, the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education.

Course topics include the following:

  • Health administration and service
  • Human resources in organizations
  • Health services financial management
  • Hospital organization and management
  • Project management and team leadership

The program is offered online to make it more feasible for working healthcare professionals.
