1. CLAS Voyage

Going forward, the Voyage will have weekly updates in a consistent format to manage information flow on the variety of projects. Individual contact info will be listed when appropriate, but for any areas without or for questions please reach out to Kris Pachla ([email protected]) or Rachel Paris ([email protected]).

Highlights:

The CLAS Center for Experiential Education and Community Engagement has a new name! Streamlining, and creating better clarity around the vision of the work, CCEECE is now CCEL (pronounced Cecil): The CLAS Center for Experiential Learning. We are working on a website to house the information and will unveil that shortly.

A team from GVSU has been accepted to the 2023-2024 AAC&U ePortfolio Institute. Kris Pachla (CCEL), Bradford Dykes (CCEL/STA), Cathy Buyarski (CLAS Advising), Christine Rener (FTLC), and Jackie Rander (Libraries) will be learning, designing and iterating on models for the ePortolio system built into the Voyage. This group will be sharing at various points in the year, so look for opportunities to share feedback and learn about the new system.

Status Updates:

The Curricular Frameworks for High-Impact Practices are being revised based on unit head feedback and will be sent back out for additional feedback the week of 11/14.

The SLC and Embarking Experience Pilot application is nearly complete and will be released the week of 11/14. Applications will be due near the start of the Winter semester. If you haven’t reached out to consider an idea, please do so soon.

In early Winter semester, CCEL will be calling for unit applications for summer work to embed high impact practices into majors.

The Voyage team is beginning to research skills and competencies to track for students, similar to the University of Minnesota CLA Competencies

Next Steps and Action Items:

The Voyage team continues to iterate on the Curricular Frameworks for High Impact Practices. Soon we will be ideating on how extra-curricular activities fit in to the ePortolio and skills transcript models, and what competencies to track and communicate. If you have experience or ideas, please email Kris or Rachel.

The release of the Curricular Frameworks will be accompanied by a feedback mechanism, both for feedback on the models and for the beginning stages of a landscape analysis to determine which courses may be candidates for alignment with our Frameworks.

The SLC and Embarking Experience Pilot application will be due at the start of Winter Semester. Consider conversations with Kris and Rachel and coordination with units for potential pilots.

2. COVID Vaccine Compliance

Registration holds were applied to 363 current students who are not in compliance with GVSU’s COVID vaccine policy. This hold prevents a student from adding/dropping courses. An email has been sent to each of these students notifying them of the hold and the process for a potential exemption. If you hear from any students, please refer them to [email protected] and/or the COVID-19 Vaccine Reporting and Exemptions Website

The Registrar’s Office will work to get these students into compliance and then lift their hold. These students have been reminded of the vaccine policy in multiple ways over time, including emails, texts, and phone calls. As has happened in the past, a consequence (such as a hold) is sometimes what it takes to get a student to act.

3. Accepting Nominations for CLAS DEIA Committee

The CLAS Dean’s Office is seeking nominations for affiliates, tenure-track faculty, tenured faculty, and full-time AP and PSS staff (30 hours or more per week) to form and then serve on the CLAS DEIA Committee. To learn more about the committee, see the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Belonging in CLAS webpage. Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate others or themselves to serve on the committee. Nominations are due November 11, 2022. They should be submitted using the Nominate for DEIA Committee form. Those accepting nomination and those who nominated themselves will be asked to submit a letter of intent of up to one page to Associate Dean Dwayne Tunstall ([email protected]) by December 7, 2022.

4. Retirement of Director of Communications & Advancement, Monica Johnstone and posting of position

Just shy of 16 years in the position, Monica Johnstone will retire effective December 31, 2022. She was the first to hold the position and instituted our familiar college publications, developed the website into the resource it is today, instituted the Faculty Regalia Repair Clinic and the Repair Clinic for students, was the recipient of the AP Achievement Award, and served ex officio on the CLAS Faculty Council throughout her time at GVSU.

In keeping with her interests, Monica’s Trunk Show (a quilt show-and-tell event) will take place on Friday, December 2 at 3:30 p.m. in MAK BLL 126.

You will see your Weekly Mailing coming from a new email address in January, and for a while Betty Schaner will be answering queries on [email protected]. Some other functions will also be performed by capable interim caretakers until CLAS hires a successor.

The position was posted this week, and we thank you for your patience during the transition.

5. Culminating Experience

From Instructional Policies SG 3.04

Culminating Experience

Instructors are expected to provide a culminating experience for each course. This experience should be held at the same time and location scheduled by the Registrar. Any exceptions must be approved by the appropriate academic dean.
