1. CLAS Voyage

To help the work of the CLAS Voyage flow, we are pleased to announce that Rachel Paris, ’17, has joined us as of November 1 to help manage the multiple workstreams of the Voyage, support the Alumni-in-Residence program, and other projects that come out of the visioning work. Rachel has a BS in Allied Health Sciences from GVSU and was in the Honors College here before going on to get an MA in Student Affairs Administration from MSU. She has experience working with faculty and in community-based learning as part of MSU’s Center for Community Engaged Learning. She has spent the last two years working for Oregon State University in their advising and student affairs offices and is excited to come back to GVSU as part of our work to launch the Voyage.

Please welcome Rachel the next time you are on the 4th floor. Her office will be MAK B-4-221 right next to Kris Pachla’s office.

Now that the work is accelerating, going forward, Rachel and Kris will be creating a template for weekly communication on the milestones achieved, updates, and timeline for the Voyage launch. Please look for that consistent structure starting on November 9. In the next few days and weeks, we will also be releasing the pilot application and frameworks for college-wide feedback on our operational definitions of our high-impact practices.

2. Opportunity to provide comment on the Guiding Principles & Strategic Pillars – Draft for Discussion

The Dean recently asked the CLAS Faculty Council to provide comments on a draft under consideration by the Provost and Provost’s Cabinet toward a strategic set of guiding principles for academic affairs in alignment with Reach Higher 2025. The Faculty Council recommended that this opportunity to comment be opened to faculty and staff at this time. Read the draft and leave your comments on the online form provided by November 22.

3. News from CUSE you can use

The Kindschi Undergraduate Research Fellowship in the Sciences provides financial support to students pursuing rigorous, independent scholarship during the academic year, mentored by a faculty member in one of the following areas: aquatic sciences, allied health professions, biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, information systems, mathematics, movement science, physics, and statistics. Proposals related to the Barbara Kindschi Greenhouse are also encouraged. Applications for Winter 2023 are due November 11, 2022.

Entering Mentoring (Articulating Mentoring Philosophy and Plan, Aligning Expectations)
Friday, November 18, 2022, 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. in 1104 Kirkhof Center
Developed by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Research (CIMER), Entering Mentoring is an evidence-based, interactive approach designed to help mentors develop skills for engaging in productive, culturally responsive, research mentoring relationships—relationships that optimize the success of both mentors and mentees. The Entering Mentoring curriculum provides mentors with an intellectual framework, an opportunity to experiment with various mentoring techniques, and a forum for addressing mentoring dilemmas with support from fellow faculty. Presented by Dr. Susan Mendoza (CUSE) and Dr. Jamie Owen-DeSchryver (Psychology).

4. Student Success Strategies

Winter 2023 Registration Outreach

Each unit head receives bi-weekly lists of currently enrolled students in each major who have yet to register for the 2023 winter semester. We are at a deficit compared to this time last year in student credits hours and head count. These next few weeks before the end of the semester are a perfect time to reach out to your advisees who have yet to register. You may want to highlight some of the classes you are teaching in Winter 2023 that are low enrolled and still have room for students. If you need any assistance with this outreach, please contact AD Schaner ([email protected]). Thank you all for your help with this important initiative.

Complete Withdrawal

Students withdrawing from all courses during an academic term must submit an electronic complete withdrawal form and forward the form via email to the to the Registrar’s Office at [email protected]. Students do not need to obtain the signature of their faculty or professional advisor on the form. The deadline for submitting a complete withdrawal form for any semester is 5:00 pm on the Friday of the last week classes (December 9, 2022), prior to the start of final exams. After this date, students will need to appeal for a complete withdrawal through the Academic Review Committee.

The late drop process for single courses requires approval from the instructor, unit head and the Student Academic Success Center. These requests do not come to the CLAS Deans Office.

Tutoring and Reading Center Support

We are approaching the tipping point for many students, so this is a great time to remind them about the Tutoring and Reading Center. We offer in-person and virtual tutoring appointments for many courses across the university, as well as reading support for all students, regardless of course or year. In addition, staff from the TRC offer in-class visits (5-10 minutes long) as well as boilerplate email copy under Faculty and Staff Resources on the TRC website to help make referring students to our services as easy as possible.

Counseling and Mental Health Support

The University Counseling Center provides an array of services—all with the purpose of improving the mental health of the GVSU community through counseling, education, and consultation. If you feel concerned about a student’s mental health, the University Counseling Center offers a variety of services tailored to each student’s individual needs:

5. Giving Tuesday

This year for Giving Tuesday the university will be focusing on one fund – Replenish Student Food Resource Fund. The Annual Giving Team will be conducting a campus food drive starting on Monday, November 14 to collect food and raise awareness for the Replenish Food Pantry fund for Grand Valley students. While the university Giving Team is focusing on Replenish, donors can give to whatever fund they wish, and these gifts will still count toward the goal.

If your department would like to participate in Giving Tuesday in this way, please contact Mona Silva ([email protected]) if you have not done so already. The CLAS Deans Office student employees will make the rounds to your department on November 30 to pick up donations.

6. GVSU Employee Departure Notice Process – From Human Resources

In addition to submitting a formal resignation or retirement notice to the Appointing Officer, Human Resources now requires the Supervisor or Academic Coordinator to complete the online Departure Form. Click GVSU Employee Departure Notice Process to submit the form when a faculty or staff member retires or resigns, and for helpful information and checklists for a smooth transition.
