1. Welcome our new Office Assistant Susan Weise

Please help us welcome Susan Weise to the Dean’s Office Team. Starting September 19, Susan will serve as our new Office Assistant, replacing Rafael Juarez-Yuen who moved to the Kirkhof School of Nursing.

Susan is new to Grand Valley and comes to us with many years of professional administrative experience. She most recently worked in an administrative role for Head Start for Kent County as the Health Services Program Coordinator. Her duties will include serving as the direct support person for Assistant Dean Michelle McCloud, coordination of Unit Head Meetings, and other administrative duties. Welcome Susan!

2. CLAS Voyage

The Voyage team is deep into review and drafting of the definitions and characteristics of curriculum-based high-impact practices. Faculty fellow teams, in collaboration with our campus partners, are drafting quality matrices to use as rubrics for a yet-this-semester landscape analysis of the college’s offerings. This work will also explore anticipated outcomes and opportunities for faculty and staff learning.

Those quality matrix teams are:

Course-Based Undergraduate Research, Community Based Research, Mentored Research and Creative Expression:

  • Dawn Hart and Melissa Morrison

Study Abroad, Study Away, and Global Learning:

  • Len O’Kelly and Majd Al-Mallah

Internships, Co-Ops and Practica:

  • Kristin Hedges and Len O’Kelly

Linked Courses and Student Learning Communities:

  • Majd Al-Mallah and Bradford Dykes

Community-Based and Service Learning:

  • Bradford Dyles and Kristin Hedges

Capstones:

  • Melissa Morrison and Dawn Hart

Once drafted, we will start a feedback cycle to determine if these are agreeable for the college and if there are other aspects that we are missing. A larger group, including the Student Success Team, is looking at the first-year seminar.

Office Hours Reschedule

Zoom’s servers crashed last week during our scheduled office hours. We are looking to reschedule for next week. Stay tuned!

Project Manager

The project manager position closes this Friday, September 23. If you know of anyone that would be a good fit, please send them to the GVSU Job Board posting for application.

3. New Professional Development Funding Opportunity

To help defray the costs of attending or participating in professional job-related conferences, seminars/webinars, meetings, or other development opportunities, CLAS is pleased to announce the new CLAS Professional Development Fund for all staff (AP and PSS), as well as affiliate and visiting faculty. The use of funds does not require the presentation of papers at a conference or conference committee participation. Staff requests will be prioritized since they do not have access to PD funding from the university at this time. Eligible faculty will need to show that they have applied for funding from CSCE and/or FTLC before being considered for CLAS PD Fund support.

Learn more on the new CLAS Professional Development Fund webpage where you will also find the online application.

4. CLAS TT Faculty Fall Election 2022

TT Faculty Election: Voting begins today! The ballot will be open from 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 21 until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28. Questions may be directed to Sally Ross ([email protected]).

Approval Voting: CLAS elections use approval voting. Approval voting is a method that lets voters choose (or "approve") any number of candidates on the ballot. For example, if there are 5 people running for 2 seats on a committee and all of them appear capable of embracing the work of the committee (based on the text they uploaded when they accepted the nomination), then you may vote for all 5. Once voting is open, click on the ballot link and vote for a nominee by clicking on the box beside the nominee’s name. Once you submit your ballot you will not have an opportunity to re-enter any information.

Information on committees and candidate statements may be viewed on the CLAS Faculty Governance and Elections page.

 5. CUSE Mentoring Seminar

CUSE will be offering Entering Mentoring Training for faculty mentors. Developed by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Research (CIMER), this mentor training is an evidence-based, interactive approach designed to help mentors develop skills for engaging in productive, culturally responsive, research mentoring relationships—relationships that optimize the success of both mentors and mentees. Two sessions will be provided in both Fall and Winter semesters. The full curriculum will be available in May 2023.

 Advisee Lists

There are two ways for faculty to access accurate advisee lists:

Navigate Platform: This preferred system allows you to easily access your assigned students once you log in. You can email students directly from the platform, either individually or as a group. You can also issue Academic Alerts via your Navigate access and track the outreach progress. Navigate also allows you to track the academic standing for of your assigned advisees as well as enter notes after advising meetings.

Banner: To see an accurate list of students that have been assigned to you, the easy to follow instructions are located on the CLAS Faculty Advisor Website. Just click on Advisee List in Banner and follow the steps.
