Technical Writer

I write help documents for my company's business management software, basically covering all the features available for a business to use with the software. The help documents have their own website in a manual-style format for our dealers to use to help them with whatever issue they have (with the end goal being to help our customer service department receive less calls).

Writing is essentially what I do all day, whether it's writing help documents from scratch or reading what was previously written and figuring out how it can be reworded to fit the modern state of the software. I get to take a break from writing to capture and edit screenshots that accompany the help documents as well. Each section has multiple screenshots to help the reader follow with directions.

After I graduated from GVSU, I used both Indeed and Linkedin to apply for Technical Writing jobs until I found this one that turns out to suit me well. Straightforward but happy where it ended up!

The environment the Writing Department creates for constructive criticism while still working as a team to get to the best solution is pretty reflective of what I've seen outside of college so far. It seems like you always need to work with someone (in my case, the developers for our software) to better a product/content. Aside from the actual knowledge of writing itself, I would say the biggest impact has been teaching me to be a team player.

Don't be afraid to apply to jobs outside your comfort zone! There are tons of different types of writing jobs out there, but at the end of the day writing is the core!
