GVSU COMMENTS ON PROPOSED TITLE IX CHANGES

Dear Campus Community,

On November 29, 2018, the United States Department of Education released a notice of public rule making (NPRM) soliciting comments on proposed changes to the interpretation and implementation of Title IX (Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Sex in Education Programs or Activities Receiving Federal Financial Assistance).

In response, Grand Valley State University officials took comments received from many constituents, including from the Student Senate and the It’s On Us student organization, under consideration. On January 30, 2019, President Thomas J. Haas submitted formal comments on behalf of the University. In addition, the American Council on Education (ACE), of which GVSU is a member, also submitted comments that further reflect those provided directly by the University. All comments submitted to the Department of Education are accessible at the Federal Register.

The Department of Education received over 100,000 comments resulting in many experts believing implementation of any actual changes taking at least six to nine months.

GVSU will continue its concerted efforts in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all community members and our visitors, and working to eliminate sexual violence in all of its forms.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Division of Inclusion and Equity at [email protected].

Very sincerely,

Jesse M. Bernal, Ph.D.
Vice President for Inclusion and Equity
Grand Valley State University
